An 80mm polished sphere of Brazilian carnelian agate with a genuinely uncanny resemblance to a small world seen from orbit. Deep burnt-orange landmasses spread across pale cream and white terrain, their edges curving and lobed like coastlines. Scattered across the orange are dark green dendrites — fern-like mineral growths of manganese and iron oxide that read as forests or vegetation from a distance. Turn the sphere and the geography changes completely. One face is dominated by a broad orange continent with a long green ridge running through it; another shows white crystalline highlands with small orange islands; another opens into a druzy quartz pocket, a small crater of sparkling crystal points where a gas cavity was cut through during shaping. The agate itself formed in a basalt cavity, band by band, as silica-rich water filled the void over millions of years. The orange is iron oxide, the dendrites grew along fracture surfaces as mineral-rich solutions seeped through, and the crystal pocket is the part of the cavity that never filled. Polished to a full mirror finish across the whole surface. Includes the custom metal-and-wood display stand shown.
