About this stone
Natural amethyst geode section from Brazil with a cluster of large golden calcite crystals grown right alongside it.
The amethyst forms a curving half-moon wall of well-terminated points, deep grape-purple at the core fading to pale lilac at the rim. Turn it around and the outer edge shows the geode's full cross-section: blue-grey and white agate banding, a dark chalcedony line, and the rust-brown rind where the cavity met its basalt host.
Beside it rise the calcites — a cluster of big, blocky honey-to-butter-yellow crystals, several of them palm-length, with sharp terminations and smaller secondary crystals crusted along their edges. Near the base the yellow shades into pale grey-green where the crystals grew in stacked, stepped layers you can see in the broken surfaces. Where the two minerals meet, small clear calcite crystals sit tucked in among the amethyst points — the calcite grew in place on top of the amethyst, long after the purple had finished forming.
The order matters. The geode formed as a gas bubble in ancient lava flows, agate lined the walls first, amethyst grew inward, and only after all that did calcium-rich fluids arrive and build the calcite. Having both, at this scale, in one piece is what collectors look for in Brazilian geode material.
Switch off the lights and put a longwave UV lamp on it and the calcite blazes a bright icy blue-white while the amethyst goes completely dark beside it — a striking demonstration of which mineral is which, and a completely different specimen after dark.
Natural, untreated, undyed. The amethyst and calcite are a single natural specimen; it has been mounted on a separately cut stone base, secured with adhesive, for stable display. The base is not part of the original specimen.
